Flat White Caffeine Content: Complete Espresso Drink Guide

Flat white caffeine content and why ristretto changes it

A Starbucks flat white has 130 mg of caffeine in a short or tall and 195 mg in a grande or venti, made with ristretto shots. A traditional flat white from a specialty cafe is a double shot, which puts it around 125 to 155 mg.

The flat white is the one milk drink where the shot style matters. It is built on ristretto, a shorter pull with the same coffee dose and less water. Less water means slightly less extracted caffeine per shot, but the drink usually gets more shots than a latte in the same cup, so the total comes out higher.

Starbucks flat white by size

Size Ristretto shots Caffeine
Short (8 oz) 2 130 mg
Tall (12 oz) 2 130 mg
Grande (16 oz) 3 195 mg
Venti (20 oz) 3 195 mg

Figures from Caffeine Informer's flat white page. The per-shot math works out to 65 mg per ristretto shot against the 75 mg Starbucks counts for a standard shot. Order it Blonde and the guide lists 150, 150, 225 and 225 mg.

Put next to a latte, the difference is the whole point of the drink: a tall latte is one shot at 75 mg, a tall flat white is two ristretto shots at 130 mg. In the same 12 oz cup you get nearly twice the caffeine and a much more coffee-forward taste. The UK flat white is a single size at 150 mg.

The cafe version

Outside the chains a flat white is a double shot, often ristretto, under 5 to 6 oz of thin-textured milk. USDA lists restaurant-prepared espresso at 212 mg of caffeine per 100 g, about 63 mg per fluid ounce, so a 2 oz double is roughly 125 mg. Caffeine Informer lists a shot at 77 mg per 1.5 fl oz and cites a study where double shots from different outlets ranged from 58 mg to 185 mg. Ristretto pulls sit a little under the full-shot figure for the same dose, though not by much: most of the caffeine comes out early in the extraction.

What actually moves the number

Dose first. A cafe pulling 20 g doubles puts more caffeine in the cup than one pulling 16 g, ristretto or not. Then the blend: robusta-heavy espresso blends carry more caffeine than 100 percent arabica. Then shot count, which at chains is fixed by cup size. Milk type does nothing; oat, whole and skim all add zero. If you want a lighter flat white, ask for one shot rather than a smaller cup, since a short and a tall get the same two shots at Starbucks.

For context, the FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults. That is information, not advice. How caffeine affects you depends on your own tolerance and health.

FAQ

Does a flat white have more caffeine than a latte?

At Starbucks, yes. A tall flat white is 130 mg (two ristretto shots) against 75 mg for a tall latte (one shot). A grande flat white is 195 mg against 150 mg.

Does ristretto mean less caffeine?

Slightly less per shot than a full-length shot of the same dose, because less water passes through. The flat white makes up for it with more shots per cup.
