What you are really choosing between
Control against repeatability. A bare steam wand gives you every variable and no help; an automatic frother gives you the same result every time and no control. Neither is better in the abstract, and the right one depends on whether you want to learn milk texture or just have it.
If you already own an espresso machine, the wand is usually the answer and the money is better spent elsewhere. The National Coffee Association's espresso equipment list is the machine, a scale and a grinder (NCA, espresso); a second frothing device is not on it.
Cleaning is the spec that decides whether you keep using it
Milk residue sets fast. A frother with a removable whisk and a non-stick jug gets rinsed; a sealed unit with a fixed impeller gets abandoned. Check how the thing comes apart before you check what its presets are called.
The mistake buyers make
Buying a frother to fix an espresso problem. If the base of the drink is thin, the answer is in the shot, and the NCA's targets for that are a fine grind, a 1:2 ratio and about 20 to 30 seconds. Foam sits on top of a drink; it does not rescue it.
The same applies if the base is filter coffee rather than espresso. Get the NCA's drip Golden Ratio right first, 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water (NCA, drip coffee), and then decide what the milk should do.

Do I need a separate milk frother if I have an espresso machine?
Usually not. A steam wand does the same job with more control. A separate frother is worth it if you want repeatable foam without practicing, or if you make milk drinks without espresso.
What is the difference between microfoam and froth?
Microfoam is milk with very small, evenly distributed bubbles that pours as a single texture, which is what latte art needs. Froth is larger bubbles sitting on top, which is what a whisk or a pump frother produces.
Can a milk frother heat milk as well?
Automatic induction jug frothers do, and usually offer a cold setting too. Handheld whisks and manual pump frothers do not heat, so you warm the milk separately.
