Breville Barista Express troubleshooting: the 12 common problems

Most Breville Barista Express problems come down to four things: grind that is too fine, a blocked basket or shower screen, scale buildup, or a tank that is not seated. Breville's own BES870XL manual covers all of them, and almost every fix takes under 20 minutes with the tools that shipped in the box. Here are the 12 problems we see most, with the manual's fix for each.

The light that confuses everyone

The single CLEAN / DESCALE light means two different things. Flashing means the machine wants a back-flush cleaning cycle with a tablet. Solid on means it wants a full descale. They are separate procedures with different button combos, so check flash versus solid before you do anything else.

The 12 problems and fixes

Problem Most likely cause Fix per the manual
Won't heat, steam light flashing at startup Steam dial not in STANDBY Turn the dial to STANDBY; normal heat-up resumes
No water from the group head Empty or unseated tank, or scale Fill the tank, push it down to lock, then descale
Espresso only drips, no pressure Grind too fine, dose too high, over-tamped Coarsen the grind one step at a time, trim the dose with the Razor tool, tamp 30 to 40 lbs
Shot runs too fast, no crema Grind too coarse, dose too low, stale beans Finer grind, bigger dose, beans 5 to 20 days past roast date
Espresso leaks around the portafilter Grounds on the rim or worn group head seal Wipe the basket rim; replace the silicone seal if it persists
Water pooling under the machine Auto purge filling the drip tray, or unseated tank Empty the tray at EMPTY ME!, seat the tank fully
No steam from the wand Blocked tip, scale, or dial not fully at STEAM Clear the tip holes with the cleaning tool pin, descale, rotate the dial fully
Grinder making a loud noise Foreign object or blockage in the burrs Empty the hopper, check for debris, clean the burr chamber
No ground coffee coming out Blocked chute or moisture in the chamber Remove and clean the burrs and chute; dry fully before reassembly
FILTER SIZE lights flashing Bean hopper not locked Remove the hopper, clear debris, re-lock it
CLEAN / DESCALE light on Flashing means clean cycle, solid means descale Run the matching procedure below
Machine on but stops working Thermal cutout from an overheated pump or grinder Switch off, unplug, cool 30 to 60 minutes

Pressure problems: drips or nothing at all

Work through the causes in order. Coarsen the grind by one number and pull again. If that does not open the shot up, lower the dose and level it with the Razor trimmer, and check your tamp is in the 30 to 40 lb range the manual specifies. Still nothing? The basket holes are probably blocked. Poke them clear with the pin on the cleaning tool; if they stay blocked, dissolve one of your espresso machine cleaning tablets in hot water and soak the basket and portafilter for about 20 minutes. If water will not flow even with an empty basket, the problem is upstream: the shower screen or thermocoil is scaled, and that is a descale job, not a grind job.

Grinder jams

A grinder that growls or delivers nothing usually has a blocked chute or damp grounds caked in the chamber. Empty the hopper, unlock and remove the top burr, and brush out both burrs and the chute. The manual allows a pipe cleaner for the exit chute and even a hair dryer to dry out a damp chamber. Never reassemble with damp burrs; that is how the jam comes back tomorrow.

Steam wand fixes

No steam is almost always a blocked tip. Set the dial to STANDBY, power off, let it cool, then clear the tip holes with the pin on the cleaning tool. If it is still blocked, unscrew the tip with the spanner built into the same tool and soak it in hot water. Weak steam with a clear tip means scale in the steam circuit, which the descale cycle below clears. The habit that prevents all of this: wipe the wand and purge a burst of steam after every milk drink.

Leaks

The Barista Express purges water into the drip tray after every shot and steam session by design, to reset the thermocoil temperature. A tray that fills fast is normal; water on the counter is not. Check the tray is pushed fully in and the tank is locked down. If espresso sprays around the portafilter instead, and cleaning the basket rim does not fix it, the silicone seal around the shower screen is worn. Replacing it is a five-minute job with the included Allen key: loosen the center screw counter-clockwise, drop the screen, swap the seal flat side first, and do not overtighten on the way back. A Breville group head gasket is cheap insurance to keep in the drawer.

The two cleaning procedures, exactly

Cleaning cycle (light flashing): put the 1 cup basket in the portafilter, add the cleaning disc and one tablet, lock it in with a container underneath, power off, then hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP, and POWER together for about 10 seconds. The cycle runs roughly 5 minutes and beeps three times when done.

Descale (light solid): dissolve descaler in 34 fl oz of water in the tank, then hold 2 CUP and POWER to enter descale mode. When the panel lights go solid, press 1 CUP to descale the coffee side (about 25 seconds), turn the dial right for steam, left for hot water, then repeat until the tank is empty. Rinse by refilling with 68 fl oz of fresh water and running the same steps again. Breville sells sachets, or grab a descaling solution made for espresso machines.

FAQ

Why does my Barista Express have no pressure all of a sudden? Usually the grind drifted too fine or the basket holes blocked. Coarsen the grind one step, clear the basket holes with the cleaning tool pin, and descale if the CLEAN / DESCALE light is solid.

What does a flashing CLEAN / DESCALE light mean versus solid? Flashing means run the tablet back-flush cleaning cycle. Solid means run the full descale. They are separate procedures in the BES870XL manual and use different button combinations.

Can I use vinegar to descale a Barista Express? Breville's manual only specifies its descaling powder dissolved in 34 fl oz of water. Third-party espresso descaling solutions work the same way; vinegar is not listed and can leave taste behind, so we skip it.
