If your De'Longhi Dedica is not pumping water or the flow at the group head has gone weak, the fix is almost always one of four things: an air lock in the pump, scale buildup, a clogged pressurized basket, or a worn over-pressure valve. Start by re-priming the pump through the steam wand, then descale if it has been a while. De'Longhi says to descale the moment the orange descale light comes on, and the cycle takes about 25 to 30 minutes (De'Longhi US descaling FAQ). Nine times out of ten you never have to open the machine.
Work through it in this order
The Dedica (EC680, EC685, EC885 and the Arte variants) uses a small vibration pump feeding a thermoblock. That pump primes itself by pulling water up from the tank valve. When air gets into that line, usually after you refill, move the machine, or run the tank dry, the pump spins but pushes nothing. You will hear it buzzing louder than normal with little or no water coming out. That is an air lock, and it is the single most common cause.
To clear it, fill the tank to MAX and press it down so the valve at the bottom seats fully. Put a mug under the steam wand, not the portafilter. Turn the dial to the steam or hot water position, press steam, and open the steam knob counterclockwise. Water should start flowing within about 10 seconds. Let it run 30 seconds until steady, then close the knob and pull a blank shot with no coffee to confirm the brew side is primed. This clears the air lock the large majority of the time. If it still will not prime after a few tries, pull the tank and check the inlet valve for grit or scale, and clean it with a toothpick.
If it primes but the shot flow is weak or slow, the problem is downstream. Scale is the usual culprit. Buildup inside the thermoblock and lines chokes the water path and drops the pressure the pump can deliver. Descale with De'Longhi EcoDecalk: empty the tank, add the solution and top with water to the MAX line, and run the descale cycle. Do not use vinegar or homemade acids. De'Longhi is explicit that only its descaler should be used, and vinegar can damage the thermoblock. After descaling, run two full tanks of clean water through to rinse. If the machine asks for another rinse at the end, that is normal, and De'Longhi documents that extra rinse request as expected behavior (De'Longhi Help Center).
Still weak after descaling? Check the pressurized basket. The Dedica ships with a pressurized basket that has a tiny pinhole valve on the underside, and that hole clogs with old coffee oils and lime. Pull the portafilter right after a shot. If you hear a sharp hiss of pressure releasing, the basket is holding fine. If it is dead silent or barely trickles, clear the pinhole with a needle and rinse. And before you blame the machine at all, coarsen your grind a click. The Dedica pump has less headroom than a big dual-boiler, so an over-fine grind can choke it into a dribble that looks exactly like a pump fault.
The last suspect is the over-pressure valve. On a well-used Dedica the valve can wear and bleed off pressure, so the steam wand works fine but the brew side goes weak. It is a known failure and the part is cheap, around 10 dollars, though replacing it means opening the case, so it is a last resort after the easy checks.
Symptom to fix, at a glance
| What you see or hear | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Pump buzzes loud, no water out | Air lock in the pump line | Re-prime through the steam wand, tank at MAX and seated |
| Weak or slow shot flow | Scale in thermoblock and lines | Descale with EcoDecalk, rinse two tanks |
| No hiss when removing portafilter | Clogged pressurized basket pinhole | Clear the hole with a needle, rinse |
| Dribble only, grind is very fine | Grind choking the pump | Coarsen the grind one or two clicks |
| Steam fine but brew weak on old machine | Worn over-pressure valve | Replace the OPV, around $10, case-open job |
One thing worth stressing: if the pump hums and then cuts out, unplug the machine and let it rest before trying again. The pump has a thermal cutout that trips when it runs dry, and forcing it makes things worse. Prime it properly instead of hammering the button.

FAQ
Why is my De'Longhi Dedica pump loud but no water comes out? That is an air lock. The pump is spinning but has no water to move. Fill the tank to MAX, seat it firmly so the bottom valve depresses, and run the steam wand for 30 seconds to pull water back through and re-prime it.
How often should I descale a Dedica? De'Longhi says to descale as soon as the orange descale light comes on, which depends on your water hardness, and the cycle runs about 25 to 30 minutes. In hard water plan on every couple of months, less often with filtered water.
Can I use vinegar to descale my Dedica instead of EcoDecalk? No. De'Longhi says to use only its descaler. Vinegar and other homemade acids can damage the thermoblock and leave residue that makes flow problems worse, not better.
