DeLonghi Magnifica warning lights: what each one means

As an Amazon Associate, Barista Life earns from qualifying purchases.

On a classic DeLonghi Magnifica (ESAM series), a steady water light means the tank is empty or seated wrong, a flashing water light means the flow is blocked and the machine is running noisy, a steady bin light means the grounds container is full or missing, a flashing descale light means limescale, and the four lights flashing alternately mean the infuser was left out after cleaning. Every one of these comes from the meaning-of-the-alarm-lights table in DeLonghi's own ESAM3300 manual, cited below. None of them means the machine is dead.

The alarm light table

Light behavior What it means What to do
Water light steady Tank empty or positioned incorrectly; or tank dirty or limescaled Fill and fully insert the tank; rinse or descale the tank
Water light flashing Machine cannot make coffee and is noisy, or coffee comes out too slowly Turn the steam knob anticlockwise to prime the circuit; set the grinder one click coarser
Grounds bin light steady Grounds container full, missing, or not put back after cleaning Empty the container, clean it, and insert it fully
Ground coffee light flashing Pre-ground selected but no coffee in the funnel, or the bean hopper is empty Add ground coffee or refill beans. A very noisy grinder means a stone jammed it: that one is a DeLonghi service call
Descale light flashing Limescale inside the machine Run the descale program as soon as possible; steps in our Magnifica descaling guide
Four lights flashing alternately, strange noise Infuser left out of the machine after cleaning Keep the door closed, press the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons together until the lights go off, then refit the infuser
1-cup and 2-cup lights flashing alternately Infuser not inserted correctly, so the service door will not close properly Press the infuser where marked PUSH until it clicks, check the two red buttons spring out, close the door
Three lights on and flashing Machine switched on with the steam knob open Turn the steam knob clockwise all the way
General alarm light flashing Service door open Close it; if it will not close, the infuser is seated wrong. Deep dive: the general alarm light guide
General alarm steady, green lights flashing Infuser missing after cleaning, or the inside of the machine is very dirty Insert the infuser, or clean the interior per the manual
Ground coffee light flashing (funnel) The pre-ground coffee funnel is clogged Empty the funnel with a knife per the manual's note

Why the water light lies sometimes

The tank sensor reads a float, and limescale on the tank walls or a tank that is a few millimeters off its seat reads as empty. That is why DeLonghi's first fix for a steady water light is reseat, and the second is rinse or descale the tank itself. If the light flashes instead, the problem is downstream: the circuit is airlocked or scaled and the pump is running dry and loud, which is why the manual's fix is opening the steam knob to re-prime. Scale is behind more of this table than any other cause, and DeLonghi EcoDecalk is the acid the seals are rated for.

The mistake people make

Pulling the infuser out for a rinse and putting it back wrong, then reading the resulting light show as a dead machine. Three of the eleven rows in DeLonghi's own table are infuser problems, and all of them clear in a minute or two once the infuser goes back in with the PUSH-until-click step. The other habit worth breaking is ignoring the flashing descale light because coffee still flows; the manual says run it as soon as possible, and a machine descaled on schedule never reaches the noisy-pump stage. If nothing dispenses at all, work through Magnifica not dispensing coffee.

FAQ

Why is the water light on when my Magnifica tank is full? The tank is either not pushed fully into its seat or is limescaled enough to fool the float sensor. Reseat it firmly; if the light stays on, rinse or descale the tank.

What do four flashing lights on a DeLonghi Magnifica mean? The infuser was left out after cleaning. Keep the service door closed and press the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons together until the lights go off, then open the door and refit the infuser.

What does the flashing descale light mean on a Magnifica? Limescale is present in the machine and DeLonghi says to run the descaling program as soon as possible. Coffee still brews in the meantime, but flow, temperature, and taste degrade until you do.
