How to descale the Breville Barista Express

As an Amazon Associate, Barista Life earns from qualifying purchases.

To descale a Breville Barista Express (BES870): fill the tank with descaling solution, then with the machine off, press and hold the 2 CUP button and the POWER button together to enter descale mode. The POWER button flashes while the machine heats; when POWER, 1 CUP, CLEAN/DESCALE, and HOT WATER/STEAM are all lit solid, it is ready. Press 1 CUP to descale the coffee side, then use the steam dial to flush the steam and hot water paths, rinse the tank, and repeat the whole cycle with fresh water. Do not remove or fully empty the tank mid-cycle, per Breville's manual.

The full procedure

Step What to do
1. Prep Empty the drip tray, fill the tank with dissolved descaling solution, place a large container under the group head and wand
2. Enter descale mode Machine off: hold 2 CUP, then also hold POWER. POWER flashes while heating
3. Ready signal POWER, 1 CUP, CLEAN/DESCALE, and HOT WATER/STEAM all solid
4. Coffee circuit Press 1 CUP; solution runs through the group head
5. Steam and hot water Turn the dial to STEAM, then to HOT WATER, flushing each path
6. Rinse cycle Rinse the tank, refill with fresh water, repeat steps 4 and 5 to rinse the machine

Descale is not the CLEAN ME light

The Barista Express has two separate maintenance cycles and they clean different things. The CLEAN/DESCALE light asking for a cleaning cycle wants a tablet backflush, which strips coffee oils from the group head; that procedure is in how to backflush the Barista Express. Descaling dissolves mineral scale inside the thermocoil and valves, and no light reliably tells you when: on typical tap water, run it every 2 to 3 months, more often if your kettle scales fast. Scale is the root cause behind half the symptoms in the fix hub, from slow flow to weak steam.

What to use and what to skip

Use a citric-acid espresso descaler, Breville's own or an equivalent. Skip vinegar: it is slower against scale, leaves flavor in the circuit, and machine makers routinely warn it degrades seals. If the machine will not enter descale mode, try a hard power-off at the wall first; if flow stays weak after descaling, the grinder and basket side of the machine is usually the real bottleneck, per the dial-in cheat sheet.

FAQ

How do I put the Barista Express in descale mode? With the machine off, press and hold 2 CUP and POWER together. It heats, then shows ready with POWER, 1 CUP, CLEAN/DESCALE, and HOT WATER/STEAM lit solid.

How often should I descale the Barista Express? Every 2 to 3 months on typical tap water; more often with hard water. The CLEAN ME light is the tablet backflush, not a descale reminder.

Can I use vinegar to descale a Breville? Use a citric-acid descaler instead. Vinegar is slower on scale, lingers in the flavor, and is rough on seals.
