How to descale a Jura (and the CLARIS loophole)

Jura machines descale themselves; your job is to answer the prompt correctly. When the display requests descaling, dissolve 3 Jura descaling tablets in a full tank of cold water, wait for them to dissolve completely, place a large container under the spouts, and start the built-in descaling program from the maintenance menu. The cycle runs 30 to 45 minutes with pauses that are part of the program, not a malfunction. Two hard rules: never use vinegar, which damages the internal seals, and never interrupt the cycle, or the machine will demand a restart from zero.

The short version

Step What to do
1. Wait for the prompt The machine counts water hardness and volume; descale when asked
2. Solution 3 Jura descaling tablets, fully dissolved in a full cold tank
3. Run the program Start descaling from the maintenance menu; ~30 to 45 minutes with built-in pauses
4. Rinse Follow the prompts: rinse the tank, refill fresh, let the rinse phase finish
5. Reset The machine clears the alert itself when the full cycle completes

The CLARIS loophole

Jura's water filter is not an accessory, it is an alternative maintenance path: with a CLARIS cartridge installed and registered in the machine's settings, calcium is removed before it enters the system and the machine descales far less often, sometimes never prompting at all. The filter wants replacing roughly every 50 liters or when prompted. Do the math for your household: heavy drinkers in hard-water areas often find filters cheaper than tablets, plus the machine never goes down for a 45-minute cycle. Set your water hardness in settings either way, using the test strip in the box, because every Jura prompt is driven by that number.

What not to do

No vinegar, ever: Jura's seals are the specific casualty, and a seal job on a Jura is a bench repair, not a DIY gasket swap. Do not power the machine off mid-descale, and do not substitute a random descaler concentration for the 3-tablet dose; the program's rinse timing assumes Jura's chemistry. Cleaning tablets and descaling tablets are different products in the Jura system, cleaning tablets handle coffee oils through a separate shorter program. The rest of the machine-maintenance canon lives in the fix hub and the Magnifica descale guide covers the knob-driven equivalent.

FAQ

How many tablets does a Jura descale take? Three Jura descaling tablets, fully dissolved in a full tank of cold water, per cycle.

Can I use vinegar to descale a Jura? No. Vinegar damages the internal seals, and Jura seal repairs are bench jobs. Use Jura's tablets.

Do I need to descale if I use the CLARIS filter? Rarely, sometimes never: a registered CLARIS filter removes scale minerals before they enter the machine. Replace it about every 50 liters or when prompted.
