Dunkin's butter pecan iced coffee is regular iced coffee plus two things: butter pecan swirl and cream. The copycat: 8oz strong chilled coffee over ice, 1.5 tbsp butter pecan syrup, 2oz half and half, stirred. The swirl is the drink; it is a buttery, toasted-nut sweetener closer to melted butter pecan ice cream than to a thin nut syrup. Brewed coffee carries about 95mg of caffeine per 8oz cup per USDA (FoodData Central). This is a home version, not Dunkin's formula.
The build
| Ingredient | Amount | Replaces |
|---|---|---|
| Strong brewed coffee, chilled | 8 oz | Dunkin iced coffee |
| Butter pecan syrup | 1.5 tbsp | Butter pecan swirl |
| Half and half | 2 oz | Cream |
| Ice | 1 cup | Ice |
How to make it
- Brew coffee at half again your normal dose and chill it; ice will pull it back to normal strength.
- Stir the butter pecan syrup into the coffee before the ice, so it dissolves fully.
- Add ice, then the half and half.
What a swirl actually is
Dunkin swirls are not pump syrups; they are thick flavored sweeteners with dairy notes built in, which is why swirl drinks taste creamy even before cream goes in. A grocery butter pecan syrup plus real half and half rebuilds both halves of that effect. If your syrup tastes nutty but not buttery, a half teaspoon of sweetened condensed milk closes the gap almost exactly.
The honest brew-strength note
The most common copycat failure is regular-strength coffee over ice, which melts into brown water before the syrup, cream, and dilution all land. Dunkin brews its iced coffee double strength for this reason. Brew stronger than feels right, chill it fully, and the drink holds together to the bottom of the cup; our Dunkin iced coffee copycat covers the base brew in detail.
Caffeine, with sources
Using USDA's 40mg per 100g figure for brewed coffee, 8oz is about 95mg, and a double-strength 8oz pour lands proportionally higher (USDA). Dunkin's own size-by-size numbers are on our Dunkin caffeine pages. The FDA cites 400 milligrams a day as an amount not generally associated with dangerous effects for healthy adults (FDA). Everything on this page is information, not health advice.
One bottle does it
A bottle of butter pecan syrup converts any iced coffee; a cold brew maker upgrades the base beyond what the drive-through pours.

FAQ
What is in Dunkin's butter pecan swirl? A thick, buttery, toasted-pecan flavored sweetener with dairy notes. At home, butter pecan syrup plus half and half rebuilds the effect; a touch of sweetened condensed milk adds the buttery finish.
How much caffeine is in a butter pecan iced coffee made at home? About 95mg per 8oz of standard brewed coffee per USDA, more if you brew double strength as the recipe suggests. The syrup and cream add none.
Why does my iced coffee taste watered down? Regular-strength coffee cannot survive ice melt plus syrup plus cream. Brew at roughly 1.5x strength and chill fully before building the drink.
