How to descale a Keurig: every model, the full procedure

To descale a Keurig: empty the reservoir, pour in a bottle of descaling solution plus a bottle of water, run brew cycles into a mug (no pod) until the tank says ADD WATER, let the machine sit powered on for 30 minutes, then rinse with at least 12 large fresh-water brews. Keurig's own guidance is every 3 to 6 months depending on the model and water hardness. Newer machines (K-Supreme, K-Duo) also need Descale Mode turned on first, which is the step that trips everyone.

What you need

Option Works Notes
Keurig descaling solution Yes, the by-the-book route Citric-acid based, one bottle per descale
Generic citric acid descaler Yes Same chemistry, cheaper per descale
White vinegar (50/50 with water) Yes, with a longer rinse iFixit's home method; expect extra rinse brews to kill the smell

Classic models (K-Elite, K-Classic, older brewers)

1. Power on, empty the reservoir, remove the water filter. 2. Pour in the full bottle of solution, then a bottle of fresh water. 3. Run large-cup brews into a mug, no pod, dumping the mug each time, until ADD WATER shows. 4. Leave the machine ON and idle for at least 30 minutes. 5. Rinse: fill with fresh water and run at least 12 largest-size brews, refilling once. The full job runs about 45 minutes, mostly idle time.

K-Supreme and K-Duo: enter Descale Mode first

On the K-Supreme, with the brewer plugged in but powered OFF, hold the 8oz and 12oz buttons together for 3 seconds; the descale light turns solid and the machine runs the cycle properly. The K-Duo's procedure budget is about 75 minutes end to end per its care guide. Skipping Descale Mode is why the descale light stays on after people descale; the machine never registered the cycle. If yours is stuck on right now, the fix sequence is in our descale light guide.

If the machine is misbehaving, descale is half the fix

Scale is behind most Keurig symptoms: not pumping, short cups, loud pump noise, and mid-brew shutoffs. The other half is the entrance needle, which a needle cleaning tool clears in a minute. Every Keurig symptom we cover lives in the troubleshooting hub.

How often, honestly

Keurig says every 3 to 6 months; hard-water households should treat 3 as the number and soft-water can stretch toward 6. The machine's descale reminder is a mileage counter, not a sensor, so taste and brew speed are better tells: slow, gurgling, half-full cups mean you are overdue regardless of the light.

FAQ

Can I descale a Keurig with vinegar? Yes: 50/50 white vinegar and water, same procedure, then extra fresh-water rinse brews until the smell is gone. Citric-acid descalers rinse cleaner.

Why is my descale light still on after descaling? On newer models the cycle only counts if you entered Descale Mode first (K-Supreme: hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 seconds while off). Run it again in the mode and it clears.

How long does descaling a Keurig take? About 45 minutes on classic models and up to 75 on the K-Duo, most of it the 30-minute soak, per Keurig's guides.
