Keurig won't turn on: what to check before you call it dead

Before you write off a dead Keurig, do this: unplug it for at least 30 seconds, plug it straight into a wall outlet you know works, then press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Most brewers that seem dead are either on a switched or tripped outlet, or the power cord is not fully clicked into the back of the machine. Keurig's own support steps for a brewer that will not power on cover exactly this, per Keurig support (My Brewer Isn't Powering On).

Why a Keurig looks dead when it isn't

A no-power Keurig almost never means a fried machine. The failure is usually upstream of the brewer. Coffee makers get plugged into the outlet half of a switch, into a surge strip that got knocked off, or into a GFCI outlet that tripped and needs a reset. The cord itself is a common culprit too. On most Keurig models the power cord seats into a socket on the back of the machine, and if it is not pushed in until it clicks, the brewer gets nothing even though the wall end looks fine.

Work from the outlet inward. It costs nothing and it clears the most likely causes first. Only after you have ruled out the outlet, the cord, and a power cycle should you start thinking about a real hardware fault or a warranty claim.

What to check, in order

Step What to do Why it matters
1. Test the outlet Plug another small appliance into the same outlet. If it also stays dead, the outlet is the problem. Switched outlets, tripped breakers, and dead GFCI plugs are the top cause of a no-power brewer.
2. Move to a known-good outlet Plug the Keurig directly into a wall outlet you have confirmed works. Skip the power strip for now. Surge strips and their switches fail quietly and hide the fact that the brewer is fine.
3. Reseat the power cord Press both ends of the cord firmly. At the machine, push the connector in until you hear a click. A cord that is not fully clicked in reads as a dead machine, per Keurig support.
4. Power cycle Unplug for at least 30 seconds, plug back in, then press the power button. Hold it about 10 seconds if it does not light. A full power cycle clears a hung controller so the button responds again.
5. Reseat the reservoir Lift the water reservoir out and set it firmly back into its slot until it sits flush. A misaligned reservoir breaks the contact the brewer needs and can leave it unresponsive.
6. Inspect the cord Run your hand along the whole cord for kinks, fraying, or heat damage near the strain relief. A damaged cord is a safety issue and a clear reason to stop and contact support.

Run these in order and stop at the first one that brings the machine back. If the button lights up after any step, you are done. If you get through all six and the brewer still shows nothing, the odds of a fixable-at-home problem drop sharply.

When it is the cord versus the machine

The fastest way to split a bad cord from a bad brewer is to test the outlet with something else, then reseat the cord hard at the machine end. If the outlet powers other devices and the cord is clicked in and undamaged but the Keurig still stays dark, you have narrowed it to the machine. A replacement power cord is a cheap thing to rule out first if yours looks worn.

If it still will not turn on: warranty

A Keurig that stays dead through every step above is a warranty conversation, not a repair project. Most Keurig brewers carry a Limited One Year Warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. Call Keurig customer service at 1-866-901-BREW (1-866-901-2739), open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST, seven days a week. Do not ship a brewer back on your own first. Keurig asks you to speak with customer service to get a Return Authorization before returning anything for servicing (source: Keurig Support). Have your model and purchase date ready.

FAQ

My Keurig has no lights at all. Is it dead? Usually not. No lights points at power delivery, not the brewer. Test the outlet with another device, plug the Keurig straight into a known-good wall outlet, reseat the cord until it clicks, then power cycle for 30 seconds. That clears most no-light cases.

How long should I unplug my Keurig to reset it? At least 30 seconds. That gives the internal controller time to fully power down. Plug it back in, press the power button, and hold it about 10 seconds if it does not light right away.

Is my Keurig still under warranty? Most models carry a Limited One Year Warranty from the date of purchase. If yours is within a year and dead after every step here, call Keurig at 1-866-901-2739 and ask for a Return Authorization before sending anything back.
