Miele coffee machine fault codes sort into three families: heat faults (F1, F2, F3, F4, F80, F81, F82, F83) mean the machine overheated or sat in a room that was too cold; water faults (F10, F17) mean water is not being taken in, usually a dirty intake filter or scale; and mechanical faults (F28, F73, F74, F75, F76, F77, F226) point at the brew unit, valves, or a jammed capsule. Most have a documented self-fix, and every meaning below comes from Miele's own USA support pages, cited at the end. Anything that survives its fix steps is a Miele Service call, full stop.

Why the power-cycle fix is real, not folklore
The mechanical codes (F73, F74, F77, F226) are the machine failing a motorized self-check on the brew unit or valves at startup, and cutting power forces a full re-initialization; that is why Miele's own fix for the valve faults is literally unplug and replug. The water faults are the opposite: F10 and F17 are almost always debris on the intake filter or scale in the valve, which is why both procedures end in a descale with Miele descaling tablets, the chemistry the machine's seals are specified for.
The mistake people make
Going past the documented steps. A Miele that still throws a heat fault after cooling, or a valve fault after a power cycle, has a sensor or heater problem behind panels carrying mains wiring, and Miele's answer on every one of these pages is the same: contact Miele Service.
