A moka "cup" is a 1.5 oz espresso serving, not a mug: the 3 cup Moka Express brews about 4.4 oz of coffee from a 13 gram dose, the 6 cup 8.5 oz from 26 grams, the 9 cup 13.5 oz from 38 grams, and the 12 cup 18 oz from 50 grams, per the spec table on Whole Latte Love's Moka Express listing. One mug person: buy the 3 or 6 cup. Two mug household: 6 or 9. The 12 cup is for company. And you cannot half fill a moka pot, which is why size choice matters more here than with any other brewer.

Why you cannot size up and half fill
A moka pot's dose and water are fixed by its geometry: the basket must be full and the boiler filled to the valve, or the pressure and timing the pot was designed around fall apart. Underfilling the basket brews weak, fast, and bitter; underfilling the boiler risks burning the coffee with steam. So a 9 cup pot cannot make a 3 cup morning. Buy the size that matches your actual daily output, and buy a second pot for guests if needed; they are $50 objects, not appliances.
Matching size to household
The 3 cup fits one person who drinks moka straight or as a small latte. The 6 cup is the default couple size and the most common pot in circulation. The 9 cup covers two mugs or three small cups; the 12 cup exists for tables of guests and gets heavy on a small burner. Dose economics scale linearly (13 to 50 grams per brew, per the table), so bigger pots also consume beans meaningfully faster.
Sizing is also gasket sizing
Every size takes its own gasket and filter plate, so note your pot size before ordering spares; the sizing logic is covered in moka pot gasket replacement. Technique is identical across sizes, covered in how to make moka pot coffee and the moka pot ratio guide; only the timings stretch as the boiler grows.

FAQ
How much coffee does a 6 cup moka pot make? About 8.5 oz of brewed coffee from a 26 gram dose, per Whole Latte Love's Moka Express specs. A moka cup is a 1.5 oz espresso serving, not a mug.
Can you half fill a moka pot? No. The basket must be full and the boiler filled to the valve for the pot's pressure and timing to work. To brew less, use a smaller pot.
What size moka pot should I buy? Match your daily output: 3 cup for one small drinker, 6 cup for one mug or a couple, 9 cup for two mugs, 12 cup for guests. Since you cannot half fill, the size you buy is the amount you brew.
