Nespresso Aeroccino not frothing: the whisk, the milk, and the base

As an Amazon Associate, Barista Life earns from qualifying purchases.

An Aeroccino that spins but produces flat milk fails for boring reasons: the frothing spring whisk is missing or the stirring whisk is installed instead, the milk went in warm, the jug is coated in an invisible protein film, or the fill line was ignored. The Aeroccino3 is the same unit Nespresso bundles with Vertuo machines (bundle listing at Whole Latte Love), so these fixes apply whether yours came boxed with a machine or alone.

Flat milk, cause by cause

Symptom Cause Fix
Spins, milk barely moves Stirring whisk installed, frothing spring whisk lost Fit the whisk with the spring coil; keep the spare on the base
Froth collapses instantly Milk too warm going in, or reheated milk Start with cold fresh milk straight from the fridge
Thin froth, worse over weeks Protein film on jug walls and whisk Deep clean with hot water and detergent, rinse fully
Overflows before frothing Filled past the froth max line Froth line is lower than the hot milk line; respect it
Will not start or stops instantly Dirty base contacts or wrong seating Wipe base and jug contacts dry, reseat the jug

The two whisks are not interchangeable

Every Aeroccino ships with a spring coil whisk for froth and, on most models, a flat stirring configuration for hot milk. The spring is the frother. It is also small, magnetic, and the single most lost part in the Nespresso ecosystem. If your froth died after a dishwasher run or a house move, check which whisk is actually in the jug before blaming the machine. Replacements are cheap and sold by capacity fit.

Milk chemistry does the frothing

Foam is stretched milk protein. Cold fresh milk froths; warm milk, previously heated milk, and milk near its date do not hold air well. Higher protein milks froth stiffer, and barista oat blends are formulated for exactly this. If the machine froths water with a drop of detergent into bubbles but fails on your milk, the milk is the variable. The wider frother landscape is in milk frother not working properly.

The film you cannot see

Milk protein bakes onto the nonstick jug in a layer thin enough to look clean. That layer kills the vortex the whisk needs. Wash with hot water and detergent after every session, and do a periodic deep clean; abrasive pads damage the nonstick and make the film problem permanent. If the base will not spin the whisk at all with a clean, dry, correctly seated jug, the unit itself is the fault and replacement beats repair at this price class.

FAQ

Why is my Aeroccino spinning but not frothing? Usually the spring coil frothing whisk is missing and the flat stirring whisk is installed, or the milk went in warm. Fit the spring whisk and start with cold fresh milk.

Why did my Aeroccino stop frothing over time? A thin baked-on milk protein film on the jug and whisk kills the vortex. Deep clean with hot water and detergent, rinse, and dry. Avoid abrasive pads on the nonstick coating.

What milk froths best in an Aeroccino? Cold fresh dairy milk, or barista formulated oat blends. Reheated milk and milk close to its date will not hold foam regardless of the machine.
