Nespresso original machine not pumping water: fix

As an Amazon Associate, Barista Life earns from qualifying purchases.

If your Nespresso OriginalLine machine turns on and buzzes but no water comes out, it is almost always one of three things: an air lock in the pump, scale choking the water path, or a water tank valve that is not seated. Start by re-priming the pump, then descale if it has been a while. Nespresso recommends descaling every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first (Nespresso CitiZ descaling guide, PDF). Most of the time you never have to open the machine.

Work through it in this order

OriginalLine machines (CitiZ, Pixie, Inissia, Essenza Mini and the older lever models) run a small vibration pump that pulls water up from the valve in the base of the tank. That pump primes itself. When air gets trapped in the line, usually after you refill, move the machine, or let the tank run dry, the pump spins but pushes nothing. You hear it buzzing louder than normal with little or no water coming out. That is an air lock, and it is the single most common cause of a machine that will not pump.

To clear it, fill the tank to the top and press it down firmly so the valve at the bottom seats fully. Reach under the tank cradle and press the small spring valve with a clean finger so you feel it click. Reseat the tank. Then run the machine with a used or empty capsule in place and the lever closed, pressing the large cup button a few times. On the older lever models you can gently work the lever back and forth while the pump runs to help break the vacuum and force the air bubble through. It usually clears within a cycle or two and you will feel the buzz change pitch as water starts moving.

If it primes but the flow is weak, slow, or drips out, the problem is downstream and the usual culprit is scale. Mineral buildup inside the thermoblock and lines narrows the water path and drops the pressure the pump can deliver. This is where descaling fixes the machine. Empty the capsule container, drip tray and water tray and reinsert them. Fill the tank halfway and add one packet of Nespresso descaling solution. Enter descaling mode by pressing and holding both cup buttons together for 3 seconds until the lights blink quickly. Press the large cup button and let the whole solution run through into a receptacle, then pour the used solution back into the tank and run it through a second time. The full cycle takes about 15 to 20 minutes per Nespresso's own guide.

Use the Nespresso descaling kit, not vinegar or a store-bought descaler. Nespresso states plainly that other solutions may damage the machine, and the kit uses a mild acid meant for the thermoblock (Nespresso Inissia descaling guide, PDF). When the solution has run through twice, rinse the tank thoroughly, refill to the top with fresh water, and run the entire tank through the coffee outlet to flush. Then press and hold both cup buttons for 3 to 5 seconds to exit descaling mode. Keep the solution away from your eyes and away from children; if it contacts your eyes, rinse for 15 minutes and seek advice.

Symptom, cause, first fix

What you see Likely cause First thing to try
Loud buzzing, no water Air lock in the pump Reseat tank, press base valve, run a few blank cycles
Weak or slow trickle Scale in the thermoblock Run a full descaling cycle
Nothing at all, quiet pump Tank valve not seating Press the spring valve under the tank, reseat firmly
Water but no coffee Capsule not pierced or clogged path Try a fresh capsule, then descale

If the machine still will not pump after priming and a descale, the pump or a seal may be failing, and that is a service call. For parts you can safely swap yourself, a spare water tank or a fresh descaling kit are the common buys:

FAQ

Why is my Nespresso buzzing but not pumping water? That noise with no water is an air lock in the pump, most often after a refill or the tank running dry. Reseat the tank, press the spring valve underneath so it clicks, and run a few blank cycles to push the air bubble through.

How often should I descale a Nespresso OriginalLine machine? Nespresso recommends every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, and the cycle takes about 15 to 20 minutes with the Nespresso descaling kit.

Can I use vinegar to descale my Nespresso instead? No. Nespresso says other solutions, including vinegar and store-bought descalers, may damage the machine. Use the Nespresso descaling kit, which is formulated for the thermoblock.
