What is a puppuccino? How to order the free Starbucks pup cup

A puppuccino is a small cup of plain whipped cream that Starbucks gives out free for dogs. It is off menu, so you have to ask for it by name or just say "some whipped cream in a cup for my dog." A Starbucks spokesperson has confirmed the practice: "All customers have the ability to order extra whipped cream for a beverage, and we've seen customers order this for their dogs at no extra charge" (via Reader's Digest). No coffee, no caffeine, no charge.

How to order a pup cup without making it weird

There is no button for it on the register and no line on the menu board, which throws people off. From behind the counter it is one of the easiest things we make. Walk up or pull through the drive thru and ask for a puppuccino. If the barista gives you a blank look, "a short cup with just whipped cream for my dog" gets it done every time. It is a short cup filled with whipped cream and nothing else.

You do not have to buy anything to get one, but it lands better if you do. Baristas hand these out all day for regulars who are already buying a latte. Rolling through solely for free whipped cream, every day, is the kind of thing that quietly annoys a morning crew. Buy your coffee, ask for the pup cup, tip if you tip. Simple.

A couple of practical notes. Availability is up to the store and the barista, so a busy location mid rush may say no, and that is their call. And whipped cream melts fast, so ask for it when you are ready to leave, not at the start of a 20 minute order.

Free dog cups at Starbucks, Dutch Bros, and Dunkin

Starbucks is not the only chain that does this. Dutch Bros and Dunkin both hand out their own versions, though the name and the extras change by brand and by location.

Chain What they call it What is in it Cost
Starbucks Puppuccino / pup cup Short cup of plain whipped cream, no coffee or caffeine Free
Dutch Bros Pup cup Whipped cream in a small cup, some locations add a dog biscuit Free at most locations
Dunkin Puppy latte / pup cup Cup of whipped cream, some stores top it with a Milk-Bone type biscuit Free, varies by franchise

Is whipped cream okay for your dog?

This is a treat, not a meal. Whipped cream is dairy and sugar, and a lot of dogs handle small amounts fine while others get an upset stomach from it. Vets frame it the standard way: treats should stay under about 10 percent of a dog's daily calories, and dogs with diabetes, weight issues, or a known dairy sensitivity are better off skipping it (Sploot Veterinary Care). A few licks for a small dog, the cup for a big one, and you are in reasonable territory. This is information, not health advice, so use your read on your own dog.

FAQ

Is a puppuccino really free? Yes. Starbucks treats it as extra whipped cream in a cup, which carries no charge, and a spokesperson confirmed customers order it for their dogs at no extra cost. It is courtesy to buy something for yourself when you ask.

Does a puppuccino have caffeine or coffee in it? No. It is only whipped cream, so there is no coffee and no caffeine. The concern with dogs is the dairy and sugar, not caffeine.

Do Dutch Bros and Dunkin have pup cups too? Yes. Dutch Bros calls it a pup cup and Dunkin calls it a puppy latte or pup cup. Both are whipped cream, usually free, and both depend on the individual location.
