Saeco error codes explained: 01 to 22

Saeco and Philips superautomatics share one error-code system: error 01 is a blocked coffee funnel, 03 is a dirty brew group, 04 is a brew group that is not locked in, 05 is air trapped in the water circuit, 14 is an overheated machine, and 11 or 19 mean the machine is too cold from transport and needs to adjust to room temperature. Codes 02, 10, 15, and 22 have no user fix; they require repair through Philips (Saeco's parent company). Every meaning below comes from the official Philips support article on espresso machine error codes, cited at the end.

The error code table

Code What it means What to do
Error 01 Coffee grinder error: the coffee funnel is blocked with ground coffee Power off and wait 15 to 20 seconds for silence. Remove the brew group, dislodge the clogged coffee in the funnel with a spoon handle, vacuum out the loose grounds, reinstall, and test
Error 03 Brew group error: too much coffee residue for it to function Switch off and wait until quiet, remove the brew group, rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm water, air-dry it, then refit
Error 04 Brew group not inserted correctly Open the service door and push the brew group into position until it clicks
Error 05 Air trapped in the water circuit Power off, empty the tank and remove the filter, refill and restart, then dispense 2 to 3 cups of hot water. New AquaClean filter: shake it 5 seconds and hold it upside-down under water until the bubbles stop before installing
Error 11 or 19 Machine needs to adjust from transport or outdoor temperature to room temperature Switch off for 30 minutes at room temperature and retry; check the plug is fully seated
Error 14 Machine overheated Switch off and wait 30 minutes to cool
Error 02, 10, 15, 22 Internal faults with no user fix Contact Philips/Saeco support for repair. Do not open the machine

Three of the seven rows are the brew group

Errors 01, 03, and 04 all trace to the removable brew group, which is the whole point of Saeco's design: it comes out without tools, rinses under the tap, and clicks back in one position. The maintenance that prevents all three is a weekly rinse and a monthly regrease of the guide rails with food-grade brew group grease, which is what keeps the group moving freely enough to lock and cycle. A group that goes back in slightly proud of its seat throws error 04 immediately, so push until the click, not until it looks flush.

The mistake people make

Reading error 05 as a broken pump. It shows up right after a tank ran dry or a fresh water filter went in with air still inside, and the machine just needs the circuit purged: fill the tank, pull hot water 2 or 3 times, done. The transport errors 11 and 19 fool people the same way in winter; a machine that rode in a cold car needs half an hour at room temperature, not a service ticket. The codes that do mean a repair (02, 10, 15, 22) involve the boiler, electronics, or internals under mains power, and the official guidance is a support call, which is also the cheaper path once you run the repair-or-replace math. Same-family machines with lights instead of numeric codes are covered in the Philips LatteGo error lights guide.
