Smoothie King caffeine: which smoothies have it and how much

Most of the Smoothie King menu has no caffeine at all. The exceptions sit in the Feel Energized line, and they are not subtle: the three Pure Recharge smoothies carry 181mg of caffeine in a 20oz, 271mg in a 32oz, and 361mg in a 44oz, per Smoothie King's own nutrition data. Espresso smoothies run 159mg per 20oz and cold brew smoothies run 83mg per 20oz. Everything else on the menu lists 0mg unless you add caffeine yourself.

A 44oz Pure Recharge is nearly a full day of caffeine

Here is the part that surprises people who think of Smoothie King as the fruit-and-protein place: the strongest drink in the store does not taste like coffee at all. Pure Recharge comes in Strawberry, Pineapple, and Mango Strawberry, and the caffeine is natural caffeine derived from green coffee beans, according to Smoothie King's nutrition page. Green coffee bean extract is unroasted coffee, so you get the caffeine without any roasted flavor. The result is a fruit smoothie that out-caffeinates the chain's actual espresso drinks by a wide margin.

The scaling is worth noticing too. Each size jump on a Pure Recharge adds exactly 90mg: 181, 271, 361. Order the 44oz and you are within 39mg of the FDA's 400mg daily reference point in one cup. For comparison, the 20oz Pure Recharge Strawberry is a fairly light drink otherwise, at 190 calories and 27g of sugar on the standard recipe.

Smoothie King caffeine by drink and size

All numbers below come from the per-drink nutrition data on smoothieking.com. Smoothie King lists caffeine for all three cup sizes on the Pure Recharge smoothies, but publishes only the 20oz figure for its espresso and cold brew smoothies, so the larger sizes for those drinks are marked not listed. Standard recipes only; enhancers and add-ins change the totals.

Drink 20oz 32oz 44oz
Pure Recharge Strawberry 181mg 271mg 361mg
Pure Recharge Pineapple 181mg 271mg 361mg
Pure Recharge Mango Strawberry 181mg 271mg 361mg
The Hulk Espresso 159mg Not listed Not listed
Coffee High Protein Vanilla (cold brew) 83mg Not listed Not listed
Coffee High Protein Almond Mocha (cold brew) 83mg Not listed Not listed
Most other menu smoothies 0mg 0mg 0mg

The pattern holds across the coffee line: espresso versions of a smoothie carry 159mg at 20oz and cold brew versions carry 83mg at 20oz, so the same flavor can differ by nearly double depending on which coffee base you pick.

For context, the FDA cites 400mg of caffeine a day as an amount generally not associated with negative effects in healthy adults. How caffeine affects you depends on your own tolerance and health, so treat these numbers as information, not advice.

The espresso line is newer than you think

Smoothie King only added real espresso in late 2022. The chain announced its proprietary espresso on August 30, 2022, in a PR Newswire release that pitched it as "a better way to do coffee." The launch lineup included espresso versions of existing smoothies like The Hulk, The Activator Recovery, Keto Champ, Coffee D-Lite Vanilla, and the Coffee High Protein flavors, plus a Vegan Coffee Mocha. The same release is where the official base numbers come from: 159mg of caffeine per 20oz for espresso and 83mg per 20oz for cold brew, and either one can be added to any smoothie on the menu.

Practical ordering notes from behind the counter: if you want caffeine without coffee flavor, Pure Recharge is the move. If you want the most caffeine in a coffee-flavored drink, ask for the espresso version rather than cold brew. And if you are adding a coffee base to a regular smoothie, remember you are starting from 0mg, so the add-on is the whole caffeine content.
