Starbucks free refill policy: who gets refills and which drinks qualify

Since January 27, 2025, free refills at Starbucks are open to every customer, not just Rewards members, per the company's Back to Starbucks announcement and Nation's Restaurant News. The catch: you have to order your drink "for here" in a ceramic mug, a glass, or a clean personal cup you bring in, and stay in the cafe. Do that and refills of hot or iced brewed coffee and hot or iced tea are free during that same visit.

What actually changed

The refill benefit is not new. What changed is who gets it and how you have to order. Before this, a free refill was a Starbucks Rewards perk tied to your registered card or app. Now it is a store policy that applies to anyone. The trade is the cup. If you take your first drink in a disposable paper or plastic cup, or you order at the drive-thru, you are out. The refill only stands if that first beverage came in for-here ware or your own clean cup and you are still in the cafe when you ask.

This is part of the "Back to Starbucks" push to bring back cafe culture, cut disposable cup waste, and stop leaning on Rewards-only marketing. For a barista it is simple to ring: the second cup goes in as a refill, no charge, same category of drink. The friction is all on the cup and the "for here" call at the start of the order.

Which drinks qualify and which are excluded

Drink Free refill?
Hot brewed coffee (including Caffe Misto and pour-over) Yes
Iced brewed coffee Yes
Hot tea (brewed) Yes
Iced tea (unflavored) Yes
Cold Brew and Nitro Cold Brew No
Flavored iced tea and iced tea lemonade No
Drinks built on a Refresher base No
Espresso drinks, Frappuccinos, lattes, mochas No

Qualifying and excluded lists confirmed by Nation's Restaurant News and Tasting Table. The line to remember is that only brewed coffee and brewed tea refill for free. Cold Brew and Nitro Cold Brew are steeped or kegged products, not brewed to order, so they are out. Anything built with syrup, milk, or a Refresher base is a handcrafted drink and does not refill either.

The rules that trip people up

A few things decide whether the refill goes through. First, the cup. A ceramic mug, a glass tumbler from the store, or a clean personal cup you carry in all count. A single-use paper or plastic cup does not. Second, location. Drive-thru and mobile pickup orders are not eligible because there is no "for here" service. Third, timing. The refill is for the same visit. Once you leave, the deal resets and the next drink is a new purchase.

There is no stated cap on the number of refills during a visit, which is why the policy reads as a quiet win for anyone who camps in a cafe to work. You can nurse one paid coffee into a few hours of top-ups. Your refill also does not have to match your first drink exactly, as long as both are in the qualifying brewed coffee or brewed tea family. Ordered a hot brewed coffee first? You can refill with a hot tea. Just do not expect a barista to swap you into a latte or a Cold Brew for free.

Baristas: the smoothest version of this is calling "for here" up front so the drink is made in a mug from the jump. Customers who realize halfway through that they wanted a refill and are holding a paper cup are the awkward case. Policy sides with the for-here cup, so set the expectation early.
