How to clean a Breville steam wand (and unblock one)

The whole art of cleaning a Breville steam wand is doing it in the ten seconds after steaming, every time: purge a burst of steam, wipe the wand with a damp cloth, purge again. Milk that sits bakes on; milk that gets wiped never becomes a problem. For a wand that is already crusted or partially blocked: soak the tip in hot water or milk-system cleaner for 20 to 30 minutes, clear each hole in the tip with the pin on Breville's cleaning tool (or a paperclip), then purge hard. A wand that whistles weakly after all that is usually a steam pressure problem, not a dirt problem.

Daily, weekly, rescue

Cadence What to do
Every use Purge, wipe with a damp microfiber, purge again. Ten seconds
Weekly Unscrew the tip if your model allows, soak it, pin the holes clear
Rescue (blocked wand) Soak tip 20-30 min in hot water or milk-system cleaner, pin every hole, purge at full steam
Never Scrape the wand with metal or scour the finish; it creates milk-grabbing scratches

Why baked milk ruins steam, not just looks

The tip's holes are metered jets; even partial blockage drops steam volume and turns microfoam into big-bubble froth. If your latte art suddenly got worse, check the wand before you blame your pour: uneven jets spin milk badly no matter the technique in latte art for beginners. Milk residue inside the wand also sours; a machine that makes off-tasting cappuccinos with fresh milk almost always has a wand hygiene story.

The no-steam escalation

If purging produces weak or no steam even with a clean tip, the blockage or failure is upstream: scale in the steam path or a failing valve. Descaling is the first fix, per descale the Barista Express, and the symptom tree continues in steam wand no steam for the mechanical suspects. Machines steamed daily on hard water want the full maintenance stack: backflush when the light asks, descale quarterly, wand wiped every session, per the full cleaning guide.

FAQ

How do I unclog a Breville steam wand? Soak the tip 20 to 30 minutes in hot water or milk-system cleaner, clear each hole with a pin, then purge at full steam. Repeat if the jets still look uneven.

Should I clean the steam wand after every use? Yes: purge, wipe, purge takes ten seconds and prevents every serious wand problem. Baked-on milk is the only hard version of this job.

Why does my steamed milk taste off? Old milk residue in or on the wand. Deep clean the tip and wand exterior, then purge before and after every steam.
