De'Longhi GENERAL ALARM message: the cleaning that clears it

A GENERAL ALARM message on a De'Longhi display means the inside of the appliance is very dirty, and the documented fix is to clean the interior thoroughly; if the message survives the cleaning, De'Longhi's instruction is to contact a service centre. The same cause and fix apply across the text-display machines: Eletta, PrimaDonna Elite and Maestosa all carry the message, worded with pointers to the manual or app.

One message, three wordings

Machine Message on the display Official cause and fix
Eletta Cappuccino Top GENERAL ALARM Interior very dirty; clean thoroughly, contact service if it persists
PrimaDonna Elite GENERAL ALARM: USER MANUAL / SMART COFFEE APP Interior very dirty; clean as described in the Cleaning section
Maestosa GENERAL ALARM: REFER TO USER MANUAL OR COFFEE LINK APP Interior very dirty; clean the inside thoroughly

On LED machines without a text display, the same alarm appears as a warning light; that version is covered in our Magnifica general alarm light guide.

The cleaning that clears it

  1. Switch the machine off and open the infuser door.
  2. Remove the infuser and rinse it under lukewarm water, no soap.
  3. Empty the grounds container and drip tray, and wash both.
  4. Clean the coffee residue from the interior cavity. Loose grounds collect below the infuser seat; a dry cloth, a soft brush and a vacuum nozzle get most of it. A dedicated coffee machine cleaning brush set reaches the corners a cloth cannot.
  5. Refit the infuser until it clicks, close the door, and switch on.

Why dirt trips an alarm

The alarm fires when the machine cannot complete its mechanical checks, and a cavity packed with spent grounds physically obstructs the infuser's travel. That is why the fix is janitorial rather than technical. It is also why the message tends to appear on machines that grind dark oily beans and never get the monthly interior wipe the manual asks for.

When to stop

De'Longhi's own boundary: if GENERAL ALARM is still displayed after a thorough interior clean, contact a service centre. At that point the obstruction or fault is somewhere a cloth cannot reach, and the repair or replace math starts with the service quote.
