De'Longhi GROUND TOO FINE message: the one-click fix

A GROUND TOO FINE message on a De'Longhi means the grind setting is choking the machine: coffee is delivering too slowly or not at all. The documented fix is to open the grinder one click, turning the dial clockwise while the mill is running, and to judge the result over the next 2 coffees before adjusting again.

What the machine is measuring

The pump pushes water through the puck at a known pressure, and when flow drops below what the firmware expects, the machine blames the grind and says so. Too fine a grind packs a puck too dense to pass water. The message is a flow alarm wearing a grind label, which is why it can also appear when a very oily bean or a double-dosed pre-ground funnel chokes flow.

The adjustment, exactly as documented

  1. Start another coffee delivery so the mill is running.
  2. While the mill is in operation, turn the grind dial one click clockwise, toward the higher numbers. On the PrimaDonna Elite the instruction is one click toward 7.
  3. Make at least 2 coffees at the new setting before judging; the old grounds in the chute have to clear first.
  4. If delivery is still too slow, repeat the single-click correction until flow is right. One click at a time is the documented pace.

The while-running rule matters: the burrs take a new setting cleanly under load, and clicking a stopped grinder can wedge a bean fragment between the burrs.

If the message persists at a coarse setting

A machine that still cries GROUND TOO FINE three clicks coarser has a flow problem the grinder cannot fix, and the usual culprit is scale narrowing the circuit. Run the descale cycle with the De'Longhi descaler when prompted, and check the infuser screen is not caked. Our descaling walkthrough covers the full cycle.

When to stop

No coffee at all, at the coarsest useful setting, on a freshly descaled machine with a clean infuser is a blockage or pump fault beyond the documented fix. That is a De'Longhi support call. Do not open the grinder housing; burr timing on these machines is not user-serviceable.

FAQ

What does GROUND TOO FINE mean on a De'Longhi? The grind is too fine, so coffee delivers too slowly or not at all. Turn the grind dial one click clockwise while the mill is running, and judge over the next 2 coffees.

Why do I have to adjust the De'Longhi grinder while it is running? The burrs take the new setting cleanly under load. Adjusting a stopped grinder can wedge bean fragments between the burrs.

The GROUND TOO FINE message will not go away. What next? After two or three single-click corrections, suspect flow rather than grind: descale the machine, clean the infuser, and contact De'Longhi if delivery never recovers.
