On a Gaggia superautomatic, error 01 is a blocked grinder or coffee outlet duct, 02 is a disconnected grinder, 03 and 04 are the brew unit stuck on its way to the work or home position, and 05 is a clogged hydraulic circuit, usually air after a tank or filter change. Those five are the ones you can fix at the counter. Codes 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20 are temperature-sensor, heater and mains faults that Gaggia North America answers with the same line every time: the unit needs professional repair. Three of the five fixable codes are the brew unit
Codes 03, 04 and part of 05 all point at the same removable brew unit, and Gaggia's own diagnostic is a microswitch test rather than a parts swap: pull the unit out, hold the switch closed with an index card, and power cycle. If the machine runs its cycle cleanly with the unit out, the fault is in the unit itself; if the code persists with the switch held, the drive motor is the suspect. That order matters because a brew unit is a user-replaceable part and a drive motor is not. Greasing the guide rails with food-grade brew group grease and rinsing the unit weekly keeps 03 and 04 away.
Code 05 is almost always air, not a dead pump
Gaggia lists the hydraulic circuit fixes in order of likelihood, and every step before "professional repair" is a way of getting air out or flow back: reseat the tank, pull the filter, clean the check valve, work the flow dial while the pump is running. A machine that threw 05 right after a tank ran dry or a fresh water filter went in has air in the line, not a failure. The Anima list says it plainly: code 5 is a water circuit error caused by air, fixed by removing and refitting the tank a couple of times with a clean tank seat. Scale makes it more likely over time, so descale on schedule for your measured water hardness.
The mistake people make
Reading the repair-only codes as something to troubleshoot. Gaggia gives 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20 one answer, "the unit will need professional repairs," because they are sensor, heater and mains faults behind the panel. Time spent power cycling a machine showing code 15 is time not spent running the repair-or-replace math. The other common error is treating Gaggia codes and Saeco codes as one list. They overlap because both brands sit under Philips, but the numbering diverges: Gaggia's 03 and 04 split the brew unit fault by direction of travel, while Saeco's code 04 simply means the brew group is not inserted correctly.
