Nespresso machine warranty guide: two makers, two answers

Nespresso does not build Nespresso machines, and that is why the guarantee question has no single answer. Breville and De'Longhi build them under licence, and the guarantee in the box comes from whichever of those two made yours. The Breville-built machines carry a written guarantee of two years domestic use, or three months commercial use, from the date of purchase. For the De'Longhi-built machines we could not verify a period from a readable official document this session, so we are not going to quote one.

What we could and could not verify

The Breville-built guarantee, quoted

Both the Essenza Mini and the Pixie manuals carry the same paragraph: "Breville guarantees this product against defects in materials and workmanship for two years domestic use (or 3 months commercial use) from the date of purchase. During this period, Breville will either repair or replace, at its discretion, any defective product at no charge to the consumer."

The repair clause is the part people get wrong: "In the event of a product or accessory being repaired or replaced during the guarantee period, the guarantee on the repaired product will expire two years from the purchase date of the original product, not two years from the date of repair." A replacement machine in month 20 leaves you four months of cover, not twenty four.

What the Breville-built guarantee excludes

The same paragraph lists it: "defects caused by the product not being used in accordance with instructions, accidental damage, misuse, being tampered with by unauthorised persons, improper maintenance, consumable items or normal wear." It also excludes "liability for consequential loss or any other loss or damage caused to property or person arising from any cause whatsoever."

How to find your machine's actual terms

Two steps, no guessing. Look at the base plate or the rear label for the maker name, which will read Breville or De'Longhi, and look in the box for the separate guarantee leaflet. Nespresso's own packaging contents list on the Vertuo manuals names six items, and item six is Warranty, printed as its own document rather than a chapter of the manual. That leaflet is the binding one.

Fix it first: the Nespresso faults that are maintenance

Blinking lights and a machine that will not pierce a capsule are almost always scale or a dirty capsule chamber, both of which fall under improper maintenance. Try Vertuo blinking lights, the orange light, capsules not piercing, and descaling a Vertuo before you call anyone.
