The cleaning cycle, from the manual
- Insert the cleaning disc into the filter basket in the portafilter, and place a cleaning tablet on top.
- Lock the portafilter into the group head and empty the drip tray.
- Put a 2 L (68 oz) container under the portafilter and steam wand, and fill the tank to MAX.
- Press and hold the 1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons for 5 seconds. Both illuminate; press either to start, and the lights flash alternately while the cycle runs.
- When it returns to ready mode, rinse the portafilter, disc, tray and container.

The descale entry most people miss
Descale mode starts from OFF, not ready mode: turn the machine off, then hold 1 CUP and STEAM together for 5 seconds. Fill the tank to its DESCALE line with descaler first, and never pull the tank mid-cycle; the manual is explicit that the tank should not be removed or emptied during descaling.
