Breville Barista Express lights: what each one means

As an Amazon Associate, Barista Life earns from qualifying purchases.

On the Breville Barista Express (BES870XL), a flashing CLEAN / DESCALE light means run the 5-minute tablet cleaning cycle (a back-flush), and a solid CLEAN / DESCALE light means run the full descale. A flashing POWER light means the machine is still heating; a flashing STEAM/HOT WATER light means the thermocoil is climbing to steam temperature, or that you switched on with the dial out of STANDBY. Those meanings come straight from Breville's BES870 instruction book, cited below, and the table covers every light state it documents.

Every light state, decoded

Light behavior What it means What to do
POWER flashing Machine heating to brew temperature Wait; all control panel lights turn solid when ready
POWER flashing slowly Auto-off or re-heat cycle in progress Wait for the flash to stop and the panel to illuminate
CLEAN / DESCALE flashing Cleaning cycle required: a back-flush with the cleaning disc and a tablet, separate from descaling Run the cleaning cycle: 1-cup basket, cleaning disc, tablet, then hold 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER for about 10 seconds; the cycle runs about 5 minutes. Full steps in the backflush guide
CLEAN / DESCALE solid Descaling required Enter descale mode (hold 2 CUP, then POWER) with one Breville descale sachet dissolved in 34 fl oz of water; steps in the descale guide
STEAM/HOT WATER flashing Heating for steam or hot water; condensed water may spit from the wand, which is normal Wait until the light goes solid, then steam
STEAM/HOT WATER flashing at switch-on The dial was left out of STANDBY, so the machine will not heat Return the dial to STANDBY; normal heat-up then starts
FILTER SIZE LEDs flashing Machine is in a program or setting mode Finish the setting or wait; the manual uses this state during setup
1 CUP flashing during descale mode Descale of the coffee circuit is running, about 25 seconds Let it finish; it turns solid when the step is done
POWER + 1 CUP + CLEAN/DESCALE + STEAM all solid in descale mode Machine heated and ready for the descale steps Proceed with the coffee, steam, then hot water descale steps

Flashing versus solid is the whole trick

Breville put two different maintenance demands on one LED. Flashing asks for the cleaning cycle: a chemical back-flush that scrubs coffee oils out of the group head using the supplied disc and a tablet, and it has nothing to do with scale. Solid asks for a descale: the mineral cleanout of the thermocoil and valves. Running the wrong one leaves the light on and the underlying problem in place. The machine tracks both by usage and water hardness, so a hard-water household sees the solid light sooner; test yours with a water hardness strip. Keep Breville-compatible cleaning tablets on hand and the flashing state never becomes a mystery again.

The mistake people make

Reading a flashing POWER light as a fault. It is the heat-up indicator, and per the manual the machine also purges a little water and refuses to brew until every button light turns solid. The same goes for the steam wand spitting condensate while the STEAM/HOT WATER light flashes: the manual calls that normal. The one light state that does signal something wrong at switch-on is the flashing STEAM/HOT WATER light, and the fix is just returning the dial to STANDBY. Anything electrical beyond these states, including a machine that will not power on at all, is a Breville service call, not a teardown.

FAQ

What does the flashing CLEAN light mean on a Breville Barista Express? A cleaning cycle is required. It is a 5-minute back-flush with the cleaning disc and a tablet, started by holding the 1 CUP, 2 CUP, and POWER buttons together for about 10 seconds. It is separate from descaling.

What does a solid CLEAN / DESCALE light mean? Descaling is required. Dissolve one descale sachet in 34 fl oz of water, then hold the 2 CUP button and POWER together to enter descale mode and run the coffee, steam, and hot water steps.

Why is the power light flashing on my Barista Express? The machine is heating. It brews only after the flashing stops and all control panel lights are solid, which also follows a brief automatic purge.
