To descale a Breville Bambino Plus: fill the tank with dissolved descaling solution, and with the machine off, hold the 1 CUP and STEAM buttons together for 5 seconds. Both buttons light solid when the machine enters descale mode; press either one to start, and they flash alternately while the machine works solution through the brew and steam paths. When the solution runs out the cycle pauses: refill the tank to MAX with fresh water, empty the drip tray, and press again for the rinse phase. Alternate flashing at the end means done; the machine drops to standby. Per Breville's manual, the whole thing runs unattended apart from the refill.
The full procedure
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Prep | Dissolve descaler in a full tank; large container under the group and wand |

| 3. Run | Press 1 CUP or STEAM; buttons flash alternately during the cycle |
| 4. Refill pause | When solution is used up: tank to MAX with fresh water, empty the tray |
| 5. Rinse | Press again to resume; the fresh-water phase flushes the paths |
| 6. Done | Alternate flash, then standby. Rinse and dry tank and tray |
How often, honestly
Breville's guidance scales with water hardness, and the practical translation: every 2 to 3 months on typical tap water, more often if your kettle scales fast, rarely if you run managed water. The Bambino's thermojet heats a tiny volume very fast, which makes it efficient and makes narrow passages feel scale early: slower flow, shrinking steam, and temperature weirdness are the machine asking. The permanent fix is upstream, per best water for espresso machines; mineral-packet water turns this whole page into an annual formality.
Descale is half the maintenance story
The Bambino Plus has no CLEAN ME backflush cycle like its Barista siblings, so its other maintenance is simpler: wipe and purge the steam wand every use (the wand guide, and note the Plus auto-purges after steaming), rinse baskets, and swap the tank's charcoal filter on its clock per the filter guide. A Bambino that still runs slow after descaling usually has a grind problem masquerading as a machine problem; check the dial-in cheat sheet before blaming hardware, and the machine's full report card is in our Bambino Plus review.
